Abstract
:
Controling random expansion of cities through drawing Urban Growth Boundaries (UGBs) is a recent formally-adopted policy in Saudi Arabia. The policy has several aims, among which are organizing urban sprawl, protecting agricultural lands from invasion of artificial developments, and stimulating development of within-city vacant lands so that better utilization of both existing and intended public utilities and community facilities could be achieved. This research attempts to be pro-active in terms of anticipating the potential implications of this policy and then stating several recommendations that could help in enhancing the possibility of the policy achieving its multi-disciplined aims. To facilitate illurninating the potential implications of the policy, the British experience is skimmed through: due to differences in policy aims and other physical and socioeconomic features, the British experience is cautiously consulted. Ultimately, the research listed several recommendations. However, it is probably worthwhile mentioning that the research is biased towards subjectivity due to lack of relevant statistics. Nevertheless, the research managed to reasonably achieve its clearly-stated objective, at least in terms of anticipating what rather than how much and/or how many as far as p0licy potential implications are concerned.
